Left chest embroidery is the most requested placement in corporate and uniform embroidery. It's where company logos go on polo shirts, dress shirts, jackets, and workwear — and getting the size and position right is what separates a professional result from an amateur one.

This guide covers everything: standard dimensions, exact placement measurements, stitch count expectations, and what to watch out for when digitizing for left chest placement.

The industry standard for left chest embroidery is:

• Width: 3.5 to 4 inches (88–100mm)
• Height: 2 to 2.5 inches (50–63mm)

This size works well for most logos on adult polo shirts, dress shirts, and light jackets. It's large enough to be clearly visible but small enough to look tasteful and professional.

Variations by garment type:

For garments with a pocket on the left chest, the logo typically goes on the pocket itself (2–2.5 inches wide) or just above the pocket.

The standard left chest placement is:

• Horizontal: Centered over the left chest, approximately 7–9 inches from the center front of the garment
• Vertical: The top of the design sits approximately 3–4 inches below the shoulder seam (or 7–8 inches below the collar)

In practical terms, the center of the design should sit roughly over the left breast pocket area — where a breast pocket would be if the garment had one.

How embroidery shops measure it:

Most shops use a standard placement guide or template. The most common reference point is the center of the design sitting 4 inches down from the shoulder seam and 4 inches in from the center front.

If you're ordering embroidery for the first time, ask your shop to show you a placement template before they hoop the first garment.

A typical left chest logo at 3.5–4 inches wide falls in the 5,000–15,000 stitch range, depending on complexity:

• Simple text or icon: 3,000–6,000 stitches
• Standard logo (2–4 colors): 6,000–12,000 stitches
• Detailed logo (5+ colors, fine detail): 12,000–20,000 stitches

This puts most left chest logos in DST Studio's Standard Design tier ($7), though simple text-only designs often qualify as Simple ($5).

Text in a left chest logo should be at least 5–6mm tall for clean, readable results. Smaller text becomes difficult to read and prone to stitching errors.

If your logo includes a tagline or small supporting text, it may need to be enlarged or removed for the left chest placement.

Left chest logos typically have 2–6 colors. More than 8 colors on a left chest design is unusual and adds production time and cost. If your logo has many colors, consider simplifying for the embroidery version.

Polo shirts (piqué knit): The textured surface of piqué fabric can cause fine details to look uneven. Slightly higher stitch density and good underlay help.

Dress shirts (woven): Woven fabric is more stable than knit, which allows finer detail. However, thin dress shirt fabric can pucker if stitch density is too high.

Fleece: Fleece is the most challenging fabric for left chest embroidery. The looped surface can cause stitches to sink in. Digitizers use a topping (water-soluble stabilizer placed on top of the fleece) to keep stitches on the surface.

While left chest is the standard, other placements are common:

Right chest: Less common, but used when the left chest is occupied by a pocket or another element. Same size guidelines as left chest.

Center chest: Used for larger logos or designs that need more visual impact. Typically 5–8 inches wide on adult garments.

Full back: Large designs, 10–12 inches wide, used for team names, large logos, or decorative designs on jackets and hoodies.
